My father’s parents Melvin and Florence documented their family life on the farm in Minnesota, but also visually documented their love; a skill I think all photographers strive to master. I recently processed some negatives that somehow found themselves in my possession. These intimate hints into their courtship and marriage took me by surprise. I never knew this side of my grandparents. I felt slightly embarrassed, like I was eavesdropping on a whispered secret.
My grandparents never fell out of love. Not even after Melvin died of Parkinson disease in the early 90’s. Florence now lives in a nursing home and says she is ready to pass on to be with her love.
I like to think I inherited Melvin and Florence’s photographic curiosity and passion. I hope someday to be as lucky as they were to have such a beautiful love to photograph.
